As the cultural centre of the Saarland region, the city is dominated by the elegant Baroque architecture that defines its history.
The Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) dates back to the 1500s and the best way to appreciate it is from a riverboat. The Basilica St. Johann is a stunning example of Baroque craftsmanship, while the Friedenskirche (Peace Church) is more modest, but no less lovely. The neo-Gothic Johanneskirche (St. Johns Church) and the Rathaus St. Johann offer an interesting contrast, while on the left bank the impressive Saarbrücken Castle holds court.
The most ambient part of the city is the Fröschengasse, a street decorated on both sides by restored Baroque buildings, now home to restaurants and high-end boutiques.
